Jim's Top Albums of 2007
Mood:  accident prone

1-Bottomless Pit - Hammer of the Gods (Self-released/Comedy Minu One)
Beautiful release, buy this on vinyl !  Bottomless Pit is the new band by Tim & Andy of Silkworm, Chris from Seam and Brian of .22.  For fans of Silkworm, pavement, seam, neil young.
2-J Church - The Horror of Life (No Idea)
Lance left us this year, but not before leaving "The Horror of Life".  This is one of the most agressive J Church albums to date; filled with all right amounts of Pop Punk, hardcore, political banter, and heartfelt snippets of Lance's life.  Awesome.
3-Haram - Drescher (Lovitt)
A slight change from the previous release.  They've added another guitarist and expanded the songwriting & vocals quite a bit.  Much more ground stylistically is covered on this release.  It's not just another post hardcore album from ex-hardcore guys, there's a lot of good stuff here!!  This would fit in quite well with the best of th '90's dischord bands.
4-Dinosaur Jr - Beyond (Fat Possum)
Maybe their best full album yet?
5-Ted Leo & the Pharmacists - Living with the Living (Touch & Go)
Ted Leo always puts out great music. Solid release, maybe a tad long, but aren't most of his albums, and I shouldn't complain, more Ted Leo is a good thing.
6-Thurston Moore - Trees Outside the Academy (Ecstatic Peace)
It's seriously "sonic youth-light", so good !
7-Neurosis - Given to the Rising (Neurot)
Heavy, brooding, moody, dark.  This is their heaviest album in a while.  You can see how they created a genre, and continue to be the best.  Metal/Sludge/Doom or whatever you call it, this is good stuff!
8-The Unlovables - Heartsickle (Crafty)
Pop punk love songs !  So catchy, I really love this stuff !!
9-Shellac - Excellent Italian Greyhound (Touch & Go)
You either like them or you don't, I just happen to like them !  Great Album !
10-The Weakerthans - Reunion Tour (Epitaph)
I don't like this album quite as much as their previous releases, but it's slowly growing on me.  Good Solid melodic/indie/Alt-country/rock with great lyrics.
11-Wilco - Sky Blue Sky (Nonesuch)
It's hard to beat listening to this album driving from Sedona to Phoenix!  Not as noisy as the last couple albums, but another great batch of songs!
12-Machine Go Boom - Music for Parents (Collectible Escalators)
Cleveland band who continue to amaze.  So many great tunes.  Go see them live!
13-Modest Mouse - We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank (Epic)
It's good!  I like Modest Mouse.
14-American Steel - Destroy Their Future    (Fat Wreck)
Good rock/punk release.  So glad they've returned !!
15-Against Me! - New Wave (Sire)
Nothing remarkabley new here if you are already familiar with them, but a good solid album.
16-Robert Pollard - Coast to Coast Carpet of Love (Merge)
Great album, better of the two released on the same day.
17-Mary Timony Band - The Shapes We Make (Kill Rock Stars)
I have a feeling that Mary Timony may be about to release the best album ever in the near future, this is so good! It's much like her Helium days, actually probably better, I just got this a few weeks ago, so we'll see how it holds up.
18-Radiohead - In Rainbows (Self-released)
Best release by Radiohead since OK Computer.
19-The X Bolex - This Time Next Year You will be Oxidizing Stone (Tower Control)
Great Cleveland Act.  Wonderful but short release.  Good mellow jazzy indie rock, with a few surprises thrown in here and there.
20-Minus the Bear - Planet of Ice (Suicide Squeeze)
Such a fun band to listen to, these guys have some amazing talent and create some fascinating soundscapes.

Honorable mentions for some other releases I spent time listening to:
Bad Religion, Bad Brains, The Six Parts Seven, Pelican, Sundowner, Incommunicado, Giants, Explosions in the Sky, the Sea and Cake, Tegan & Sara, Liono, Ben Weasel

Some other highlights of 2007:
I spent a lot of time this year rediscovering and enjoying a ton of '90's & older bands that I hadn't listened to much lately; especially the back catalog of Silkworm (awesome); plus I just started the quest of listening to the entire discography of Neil Young - 3 albums at a time (woo!)
The band I'm in (SeaTac 67) has been continuing on, it's been a rough year with tough work schedules and mike f leaving the band,  but we found Ryan to play drums, and we managed to write a few new songs, met some new friends, and played some fun shows.  I think we're slowly getting better as musicians, songwriters and as a band and I hope next year turns out great !!

Things to look foward to next year: a new Dillinger 4 album, HWM reunion show, Lemuria's new album, new Pilot to Gunner, new North Lincoln, Antilles, anything my friends put out, a new SeaTac 67 album (?), and whatever life throws my way !

Jim's Top 20 Albums of 2006
1) Channels - Waiting for the Next End of the World (Dischord)quite possibly as good or better than any release j.robbins has written & performed on, and that includes jawbox & burning airlines, this is really a great album!

2) State of Ohio - s/t (self released)remember when "indie rock" used to actually ROCK (early ‘90s for those that don’t remember), well that’s what State of Ohio does: sounds a bit like this recipe: first take four guys living in Cleveland add some instruments, then toss in bits of archers of loaf, pavement, dinosaur jr, sebadoh, and superchunk and then a tiny pinch of braid & a dash of bear vs. shark into a blender and mix ... And the production is stellar too: sounds like a good analog recording that was produced around 1992 (which is a very very good thing!!)

3) Fifth Hour Hero - Not Revenge, Just a vicious crush (no idea)pop punk in the same vein musically as tsunami bomb and alkaline trio

4) Ghost Buffalo - s/t (suburban home records)amazingly mellow and beautiful rock with a sort of country edge to it

5) Sonic Youth - Rather Ripped (Geffen)come on: it’s sonic youth, do I need to say more?

6) the Lawrence Arms - Oh Calcutta! (Fat Wreck)this album captures a bit more of their "live show" feeling: another great release

7) Haram - s/t (Lovitt)imagine a touch of drive like jehu rockin’with jawbreaker... great stuff, I guess kind of like Pitchfork(the band)

8) This Moment in Black History - It Takes a Nation of Assholes to hold us back (Cold Sweat)garage, punk, rock, funk, it’s all here: this moment ... is just insane, recorded by Steve Albini who captured the intensity of what they sound like live, not to be missed

9) Don Caballero - world class listening problem (relapse)great indie post hardcore punk instrumental math rock .. Imagine a band like Rush if they played music I actually enjoy listening to, umm...yeah, (that was terrible, but you get the idea, right), a bit of a new sound, since the only surviving member of the Don Caballero of old is the drummer, but it’s still good, and what a drummer!

10) Mission of Burma - the Obliterati (Matador)oh boy... mission of burma have put out their best album yet, and that’s amazing for a group that broke up for almost 20 years before reuniting, and the sound and content is as fresh and relevant as anything out there today, there aren’t too many bands out there that sound like this, they mix classic rock, early punk, and post punk and take it to a level that few have achieved.

11) pink razors - waiting to wash up (robotic empire)imagine a punk rock Superchunk (Lance from J Church wrote something like that about these guys once, and I have to agree)

12) Just a Fire - Spanish Time (Sickroom Records)great album, if you like bands like drive like jehu and hoover, with a touch of "dub" (seriously) thrown in; check this out

13) Rise Against - the sufferer and the witness (geffen)a return to form, in my opinion, great songs, great production. Much more like RPM then their previous release: fast, intelligent, skate style punk rock

14) This is my Fist - A history of Rats (no idea)dirty, gravelly, punk rock. Sounds a bit like the distillers (NOT in a bad way!!)

15) the evens - get evens (dischord)I would say this album is even better than their first release !!

16) converge - no heroes (epitaph)hardcore, metal, whatever you call it, this is massive and might possibly melt your face off !! Some really, really good song writing here!! Yeah, it’s loud, fast and heavy, but it’s more dynamic and interesting than most bands that try this style, and to still be this creative when they’ve been around forever is even more impressive.

17) Cat Power - the Greatest (matador)Chan has evoked the old school memphis rock sound on this album, so good and relaxing, but kinda spooky at times if you really pay attention

18) Yo La Tengo - I’m not afraid of you and I will beat your ass (matador)such a mix of sounds, from ambient drones to cute 50"s-ish songs, pop, rock, quiet, fast, loud, Just about anything Yo La Tengo has done during their career is shown on this album in one shape or form, quite a mix, but it’s a nice mix for these "old timers" proving like Sonic Youth that they’ve still got "it" with their own quirky brand of rock music

19) murder by death - in bocco al lupo (east/west)nothing else I heard this year sounds quite like this. Beautiful yet haunting. Imagine sort of a Johnny Cash meets Tom Waits with lyrics built around the theme of Dante’s Inferno, mixed with some crazy music often channeling the sounds of old (including pirate, folk, and rock) add in a cello and have j.robbins record it all, brilliant !

20) TIE: Tom Waits (Orphans (Anti)) & Robert Pollard (Normal Happiness/From a Compound Eye (merge)) Orphans is a phenomenal collection of outakes, covers, and other unreleased oddities from throughout Tom Waits’ career. Many of the songs have been pulled out of the "vault" or basement or broom closet and re-recorded just for this album. As a whole: this collection is quite amazing, but from a personal standpoint, even though it’s nice to finally hear all these songs, and most of them are very good; they’re just not as good as his many albums, I guess that’s why they were unreleased/outtakes, I’ll still listen to this, but I’d prefer to pick out one of his other full lengths to listen to. Next: Robert Pollard is one of the most prolific and consistent songwriters ever (Tom Waits might be catching up ?). Two albums with enough to fit on three albums released this year, and both filled with some of the best pop songs I’ve heard. As good or better than many of the GBV releases! (I couldn’t really leave off either of these so it’s a tie this year.)

2006 Honorable Mentions(on some days any of these could move to the top 20, depends on my mood, I enjoyed all of these): strike anywhere, the Falcon, built to spill, the gossip, heavens, the steinways, whysall lane, the hold steady, none more black, the loved ones, the cardinal sin, pretty girls make graves, the lillingtons

I attempt to keep the top 20 as "new full length" releases;so here are my choices for TOP 5 "other" Awesome releases of 2006:

Roue - totally fucking totally (10" LP) (self released)

antilles/the juniper wait - split CD (Arclight Communications)

the Hollywood Blondes - 15 Minutes of Lame (EP) (self released)

Red Animal War - seven year war (end sounds)

Goodbye Ohio/Plasma for Guns - Split 7"

most ? (most bands that get a lot of hype, I can sort of rationalize why, this band ? I guess they’re just not my thing, good artwork/interesting lyrics: anyone want their new CD, cheap?): TV on the Radio (Personal taste: I suppose if you took a random person off the street: there’s a good chance they’d probably not like 19 out of 20 on my list and that the 1 left over would be "umm this one’s ok....")

2006 releases I didn’t get a chance to listen to in their entirety, but would like to: Erase Errata, Bob Dylan, Blood Brothers, Latterman, the Hot Snakes (the Australian live radio recording)

most anticipated 2007 releases: Ted Leo, Dillinger 4, J Church, the juniper wait

BEST MOMENTS of 2006: Playing, writing, and recording music with SeaTac 67, and also getting up on stage to perform 15 shows over the past year, it may not seem like a lot, but I didn’t think I’d get a chance to do all that ever again, it was a lot of fun, and I met a lot of cool folks, hopefully we’ll get back at it and do even more this coming year!

Jim's Best of 2005 List
Jim's Best of 2005 List

1) Against Me – Searching for a Former Clarity (Fat Wreck Chords)
It was a toss up for me between 1&2, I absolutely love both releases. Against Me won me over with J.Robbins' production.. Golden! Folk-Punk, Quasi-Anarcho-Punk, Just fun, amazing songs

2) Bear vs Shark – Terrorhawk (Equalvision)
Post-Hardcore ala-Braid/At the Drive In, this album is all over the place in a good way. I think another reason I put them in the "2" spot is the fact that they just broke up, and I'm dissappointed I never went to see them perform live. Not there fault, but ??

3) Lasalle – Expedition Songs (Thick)
Phenomanal indie rock with a punk edge (check out if you like Small Brown Bike, the Channels) Trading off male/female vocals with wonderful songs !

4) Portastatic – Bright Ideas (Merge)
Superchunk is on of my favorite bands, and this is the first Portastatic Album Mac has produced that ranks right with the best of Superchunk!

5) Propagahndi – Potemkin City Limits (Fat Wreck Chords/G7)
Thrash Punk with elements of Metal, Rock, and Don Henley guitar lines. Propagahndi is a very vital politically charged band who exceeded my expectations musically on this release. It also has the most amazing vocals and harmonies they've done yet. Propagahndi have always had a knack of forcing me to think about the way I live and the world around me. The problem I have with this release is that it borders on making me want to crawl into a box to live out my days away from the rest of the world, with little hope for any progress. It's much darker and less fun than previous releases.

6) Sleater Kinney – The Woods (Sub Pop)
It took a while for me to get into this album. Being a fan since their S/T release, I've liked everything they've done. There are some amazing moments on this album, but it may take some time for a lot if it to grow on me. I still like it, but not the same way as their previous releases.

7) City on Film – In Formal Introduction (Grand Theft Autumn)
Bob Nanna from Hey Mercedes and Braid, has gone full time with his once side/solo project City on Film. This is an amazing album glittering with wonderful lyrics and beautiful played guitar lines. Much more relaxed then his earlier stuff, but great nonetheless.

8) Roue – Upward Heroic Motive (Exit Stencil Recordings)
Fairly new band from Cleveland. These guys evoke the sounds of Unwound and the Hot Snakes and make it their own!

9) The Soviettes – LPIII (Fat Wreck Chords)
Fun pop punk rock, the way it was meant to be done. 3 girls & 1 guy, short, fast, glorious!

10) Medications – Your Favorite People All in One Place (Dischord)
a very "dischord-esque" sound, post-punk, dynamic, well written, exciting songs

11) Smoke or Fire – above the city (fat wreck chords)
great punk rock debut

12) The Evens – The Evens (Dischord)
emotional, tender, male/female vocals, baritone guitar, drums -- what more could you ask for, I love this band ! Starring :Ian MacKaye and Amy Farina

13) Del Cielo – Us vs Them (Lovitt)
Wonderful release! Great music in the same vain as the Reputation. Guitar drivin, female vocals, brutally honest !

14) The Hold Steady – Separation Sunday (Frenchkiss Records)
This album drove me nuts. I didn't like it, then I liked it, then I didn't. It's very intellegent bar rock, and it took awhile to grow on me, now I can't get it out of my head!

15) Alkaline Trio – Crimson (vagrant)
Another great batch of songs. It's nice to see them trying to do something a little different. I still like the less produced older Trio material, but this is still better than a lot of music I heard this year.

16) Mary Timony – Hex (lookout)
Mary Timony hit it right with this release, she finally went back a little bit to her Helium days with near haunting guitar melodies and well constructed songs.

17) Ida – Heart Like a River (Polyvinyl)
This is far from my favorite Ida release, but it brought back so many good memories, and there are so many beautiful songs on this disc, I have to be in the right mood, but when I am, this is to die for!!

18) Lungfish – Feral Hymns (Dischord)
Another stellar installment of the song of lungfish !

19) Despistado – The People of and their Verses (Jade Tree)
This is a great almost dance/punk release by another band that broke up last year. You can see the Fugazi/At the Drive in influences, but well done in their own right.

20) Latterman – No Matter Where We Go..! (Deep Elm)
Punk rock in the vein of Against me/and many No Idea bands. Fun, Honest, good natured, makes me happy to know their are still bands out there like this, that know how to have fun !

Other Amazing 2005 Releases that don't count as new full length material:

Hey Mercedes – Unorchestrated (EP) (Grand Theft Autumn)
The Cardinal Sin – Oil and Water (EP) (Grey Flight)
The Lawrence Arms – Cocktails and Dreams (Asian Man)
City on Film – American Diary (EP) (Redder)

Most interesting 2005 release I got but just couldn't really get into: Deerhoof - Runners Four (5 Rue Christine)

2005 Albums I didn't listen to, but really want to check out: Sufjan Stevens, Paint It Black, Bloc Party, Minus the Bear, Bob Mould, Neil Young

My Most anticipated list of potential 2006 releases: the Reputation, Ted Leo, the Lawrence Arms, the Cardinal Sin, Dillinger Four, Murder By Death, Smoking Popes, the Weakerthans, the Falcon, Sonic Youth and None More Black.

cleaning house
I've just deleted all the show listings and reviews from this blog. I've also become extremely busy and decided to stop posting on upcoming Cleveland and other area shows. It's tough to keep up with the schedules. So if you want to find info on upcoming shows, you can visit: Local Links

and visit the individual venue sites for their current show listings.

We'll still update around Jan 1 with our favorite releases of 2005

Jim's 2004 Music Top 10+
My 2004 Top Music Releases :

1 - Ted Leo and the Pharmacists - Shake the Sheets - Lookout
Ted's most cohesive album to date !

2 - Sonic Youth - Sonic Nurse - Geffen
Sonic Youth hasn't lost a beat. Incorporating the brilliance of their early music with the experimentation of newer material. Definitely one of their top 5 albums

3 - the Reputation - to force a fate - Lookout
The Reputation has come together with stronger more mature song writing; you can definitely see the band coming into their own, I'm still a little partial to their first release, but I love this album almost as much!

4 - Bayside - Sirens and Condolences - Victory
Imagine if the Smoking Popes were to mate with Alkaline Trio: the offspring of this pairing could result in the sound Bayside produces. Silky smooth Smoking Popes-esque vocals from the lyric book of Alkaline Trio, musically melding both groups.

5 - Colossal - Welcome to the Problems - Asian Man
phenomenal jazzy indie rock from chicago

6 - Hot Snakes - Audit in Progress - swami
garage rock the way it should be made: dirty, repetitious and so infectious!

7 - Karate - Pockets - Southern
don't expect too much post punk emo like their early stuff on this release, these guys have somewhat reinvented themselves again fusing 70's rock with jazz guitar and a little post punk emo. Amazing songs and bass lines to die for !

8 - J Church - Society is a Carnivorous Flower - No Idea
Lance has a new lineup for the band and offers up a nice album complete with dueling electric guitars and a mini rock opera ! Just a slightly new flavor to add to the J Church pop punk songbook !

9 - Tsunami Bomb - the definitive Act - Kung Fu
Agent M and band come at you bringing the punk with their best batch of songs to date,
great album! Makes you wish we had more women in punk rock!

10- The Butchies - Make Yr. Life - Yep Roc
the Butchies don't disappoint with what maybe the best and most well produced album of their career. Imagine a less political and angsty, but a bit more personal Team Dresch

11- The Blood Brothers - Crimes - V2 Records
This album may not be quite as interesting as their release in 2003, but it is much more listener friendly, it still took me 2 listens before I was able to get through some of the initially irritating screeching and screaming, but it was well worth it !

12- Enemy You - Stories Never Told - Red Scare
best straightfoward pop punk album !!

13- This Moment in Black History - Midwesterncuttalistick - Version City
Cleveland garage artsy punk groove hardcore band. I like to call it Garage Art Core. This band has the most energetic live act, and the album does not disappoint. 2nd best garage rock album I've heard this year !

14- The Soviettes - LPII - Adeline
3 girls 1 guy, all sing, all write songs. Short fast sweet as candy pop punk rock !

15- Rise Against - Siren Song of the Counter Culture - Geffen
Skate style political/social punk, imagine the Offspring if they sang about issues !

16- Social Distortion - Sex, Love and Rock'n'Roll - Time Bomb
This maybe my favorite Social D album yet, they haven't lost anything, just goes to prove
dirty, smokey punk influenced rock ages well !!

17- Hot Water Music - the new what next - epitaph
Extremely solid rock album. If you've heard Hot Water Music before, imagine if the added a little bit of Afghan Wigs style to the production. Great Release !

18- Modest Mouse - Good News for People who love bad news - Epic
best Modest Mouse album to date !

19- Green Day - American Idiot - Reprise
I'm a little tired of green day, even though this may be their best album to date, it doesn't quite do it for me anymore, but I did enjoy it, I just don't think it'll end up in my stereo too often.

20- Mr. T Experience - Yesterday Rules - Lookout
yes, Dr Frank added a little too many country elements to this album, I still like the pop punk element more than the country and more straightforward rock, but at least he's not afraid to experiment, and still writes some amazing "songs about a girl"

Honorable Mentions: Haymarket Riot, Converge, Bad Religion, Tom Waits, Silkworm, Elliot Smith, the Start, the Cure

Jim's Top 20 Albums of 2003
Well here it is: my top 20 Albums for 2003

1. Ted Leo and the Pharmacists - Hearts of Oak
Ted never fails to impress with his beautiful and honest songwriting. This is the best he has produced yet !!

2. The Lawrence Arms - The Greatest Story Ever Told
The Lawrence Arms keep impressing me more, especially with this very intelligently written album. Dueling vocals, fun pop punk with a historic, literary, and introspective twist; nothing short of spectacular.

3. Motion City Soundtrack - I am the Movie
This is the catchiest album I've heard this year. Once you hear this it's very difficult to get out of your head, which isn't a bad thing. Great high energy pop rock with moog sounds mmm good.

4. Alkaline Trio - Good Morning
Not Alkaline Trio's best album, a little overproduced but they stuck with the same song writing style they've always used. Another good batch of songs.

5. Rise Against - Revolutions per Minute
Fast skate punk rock with personal/political balladry! Best album to rock out to!! Yeah, Yeah !!

6. The Weakerthans - Reconstruction Site
This may be the best written album this year, because the more I listen, the better it gets. This is a slower kind of rock/folk album.

7. Lungfish - Love is Love
Lungfish, Lungfish, Lungfish - Kings of repetition. No one has ever done it as well as Lungfish. Problem with this album is that it only has 10 songs! I had to pull my old Lungfish albums out of the vault to get enough. I hate doing household chores, but it seems so much easier with lungfish playing in the background!

8. Hey Mercedes - Loses Control
At first listen I thought this album was a little overproduced and a little too straight foward rock'n'roll. I grew to like this album, not really better than the first, but different.

9. Spitalfield - Remember Right Now
I'm not a huge fan of cheesy lyrics and choruses, but these guys do it so well! I think this was the summer fun time album of the year !

10. Yage - Anders Leben?!
This album sent me on a sonic journey back to the early 90's hardcore scene. This band is a hardcore band from Germany, sing in English and German and sound a little like Native Nod or Current. This was a breath of fresh air for me.

11. Against Me - as the eternal Cowboy
This band is just great. Punk/Folk/Rock. Great lyrics, passionate, honest!

12. Joe Strummer & the Mescaleros - Streetcore
This album stands as a very good album. Beautiful, honest songs! A Great reminder of what Joe has done throughout his life.

13. Rancid - Indestructable
This is a good Rancid release, nothing really new here. Like em or you don't. Rancid has drawn from all their different song styles they've used on all their albums for this one.

14. Erase Errata - At Crystal Palace
Abrasive, fast, groovy !! I love this stuff. These girls rock !

15. Cat Power - You are Free
A little slow for me, but this album is all from the heart. Her best release yet!

16. Just a Fire - Light Up
"There's a Snake in the bush" yeah, great debut!

17. None More Black - File under Black
Yes I liked Kid Dinamite and I like these guys too. Not as fast and crazy but great vocals.

18. Pretty Girls Make Graves - The New Romance
I was very disappointed with this album. It sounds like the guys sat around in a room and masturbated with their instruments while Andrea was put in a closet to sing through all the noise. In other words, they tried too hard with effects and noise and left the vocals way too low in the mix !!! Nothing near the sheer energy of "Good health", but some good lyrics and if I had never heard the first album, this would be a better! Still made the list, barely.

19. The Gossip - Movement
Move me, yeah! Being a person that plays music, I don't really get into bands with just a 1 guitar and a drums or just a bass and drums, because I enjoy listening to all the instruments and their individual parts, etc., etc. The Gossip however bridge that gap because the singing is just amazing and fits with the minimalist bluesy music. She belts out the words like no other (except maybe the girls of Sleater Kinney).

20. Somehow Hollow - Busted Wings and Rusted Roots
Yes, some, maybe all of these guys played in Grade at one time or another. This album takes many of the poppier elements from the grade sound book, and they make some good songs. Besides the singer sounding like he has a cold, I really enjoy this album.

Oh, last year 2002 my top 5 was:
1) Pretty Girls Make Graves - Good Health
2) Sleater Kinney - One Beat
3) The Reputation - S/T
4) The Lawrence Arms - Apathy and Exhaustion
5) Sonic Youth - Murray Street
